The Universe

江戸時代後期の臨済宗の禅僧・仙厓義梵が「禅の真の意味」を表現するため（*諸説あり）に「〇△□」だけを墨で描いた禅画があります。仏教学者である鈴木大拙は、この「〇△□」を英語に翻訳するにあたって「The Universe」と訳したそうです。この「The Universe」に着想を得て、色の三原色である「CMY（シアン、マゼンタ、イエロー）」、濃淡だけですべてを表現できる墨（K）を組み合わせる ことで無限の可能性を表現した作品群です。

In the late Edo period, Rinzai Zen monk Sengai Gibon created a Zen painting in which only "〇△□" was drawn in ink to express 

the "true meaning of Zen" (*there are various theories). D.T. Suzuki, a Buddhist scholar, translated this "〇△□" into English as

"The Universe". Inspired by this "The Universe", this group of works expresses infinite possibilities by combining the three primary colors of "CMY (cyan, magenta, yellow)" and ink（K） that can express everything with just shading.
